At Summer Hill Children’s Centre, we believe in teaching the value of fairness because it encourages children to grow into responsible adults. So, when issues of fairness or social justice arise, we engage the children to determine a reasonable and equitable solution.

Sandpit learning

We sit around the edge of our sandpit listening to whatever issue may have been raised. The children feel empowered to speak up around the sand pit because it is a non-threatening environment. Then we discuss, share, reflect and evaluate.

It’s a valuable exercise. The children develop their skills of respect and care for one another, society and the environment. Indeed, they take a sense of ownership when they are part of the thinking and decision-making process.

We always agree on an outcome or resolve an issue. This empowers the children to be active members of our community. They can make a difference whether it is in our Centre, at home or in the wider community.
